Like a strange machination of a Jules Verne novel or a steampunk comic, this is the original Fresnel lens of the Fire Island Lighthouse. It was first lit in 1858. The glass panes are cut into circular prisms to focus light into a powerful beam that can be seen 25 miles away. (Long Island, NY)
